The COVID-19 Pandemic made our typical Move-In and Week of Welcome design process a little different in 2020. In a typical year I work with a student intern to guide the design our annual branding for this high-profile event; but an institutional hiring freeze meant I was flying solo this cycle.
Challenges were remaining flexible, creating designs that were easily interchangeable and updated, navigating new institutional spending procedures with regards to promotional items, finding promotional items that exclusively served an event purpose (while awaiting decisions on what events could look like), and ordering materials in time for distribution.
Because return to campus details were changing throughout the summer, I made the decision to rebrand our typical “Week of Welcome” to “UVM Welcome” to ensure branding materials and orderables were fluid enough to be used in any configuration of how (or when) an in-person semester would start – whether it be fall or spring – so that money spent wasn’t money wasted.
